Jessica Colton

I go by Jess! I would say I am a rather quiet, reserved person in all aspects of my life, besides CrossFit. Beyond my passion for CrossFit, I love being a mom to by teenage son. My fiance and his two young children keep me young and very busy. I recently moved from Washington State to Virginia, it's my 1st big move and so far, so good! When I am not busy with my day to day I love spending time snuggled up with my French Mastiff, Taco, reading. I love reading and learning, I enjoy fiction but will also read anything and everything that will give me insights to the world of CrossFit specifically related to methods/techniques of coaching.
Below are a list of my CrossFit Certifications:

CrossFit Gymnastics Certification
CrossFit Strongman Certification
CrossFit Weightlifting Lvl. 1

Social Media Management

Before I became a CrossFit Coach, I dabbled in the marketing industry. I assisted and helped small businesses develop, use, and manage free social marketing platforms such as: Instagram, Facebook and Google my business and YouTube.
Most recently have learned to integrate the latest trends and platforms to help businesses stay relevant. Such as TikTok, Reels and Snapchat.

Short biography

Coming from an athletic background, soccer from 4th grade to college and Fastpitch/baseball from the time I was toddler till also some college I have always been in or around athletics in some capacity or another. It wasn’t until I became pregnant that I wasn’t involved in some kind of physical activity. It was 2009, two years after my son was born, I was depressed, and weighed 165lbs almost 30lbs more than I had ever weighed in my life, even while pregnant.

My son was getting more active and I knew he deserved a mom that could keep up with him. More importantly I knew I deserved to be happy and wanted to be my healthy self again. I started running and after a 1 ½ years of progressive long distance running, I lost 35lbs. Running became a way back into being the competitive athlete I use to be, but I knew I needed something else to keep me motivated and make me feel like part of a team again. In 2014 a CrossFit gym opened in my town and hesitantly I went, it was the best decision I ever made for myself! It was more than a gym it was a whole community of people constantly cheering you on and celebrating with you as you become stronger and more confident!

After becoming more involved I realized CrossFit was more to me than just working out. I loved encouraging others, more than that I loved helping them reach their goals or find different ways to help people attain different skills in ways that were relatable/understandable to them based off my own experiences and research. More than once, I was encouraging to be a coach, it made so much sense! It was so encouraging that others saw my potential and appreciated my help, so in December of 2016, I finally took my Level 1. After completing the course, and very thorough internship, I became at first a part-time coach which quickly turned into full-time coach and then office manager of the gym. Every day I get to be out on the floor I am grateful and so excited to continue this path to help athletes be their best selves and continue to build myself up as a coach to help others be successful and find their strength and confidence!

Summary

What are you most passionate about in your work? What motivates you?

Every day I get to be out on the floor I am grateful and so excited to continue this path to help people be the best version of themselves for themselves. My motivations come from the constant growth/evolution of CrossFit, there’s always something new to learn and I want to keep striving to be the type of coach that is coached themselves. I want to continue to build myself up as a coach to help others be successful and find their strength and confidence, the same way I was inspired when I first came into CrossFit.

Are you willing to relocate?

Not at the moment, but willing and able to commute.

Which coaching skills do you possess that set you apart from other coaches?

I am a learner. I will never be the one to say, "I know". I love collaborating, conversing, and getting ideas from my fellow coaches. I loved to be coached and I'm always willing to share what I've learned with others with humility and enthusiasm.

Where do you see yourself in your career in 5 years?

In 5 years I see myself getting prepared to test for my CF-LV3 trainers certification. I also anticipate having my own "small business" as a Social Media Manager for local gyms. In my wildest dreams I would love to work on the CFHQ media team in some capacity.

Tell us about a coach you've worked with who has mentored you or a coach you've learned from online.

My first coaches from my 1st CrossFit gym the Baranowskis are the ones that introduced me to CrossFit and the two I am always thankful to for making it such a great experience. Andrew Baranowski specialized in Strongman movements, going by the name "Bear" it was easy to see why he excelled and love coaching those movements. I learned a ton and gained a strong background in Strongman where to this day that I feel is very under utilized in CrossFit. Marisol Baranowski was the reason you stayed, she showed heart, passion and compassion for everyone who walked through the door. Together they are an amazing team.
Although I was introduced to them I pay a lot of the coach I am today because of my 2nd box owner, Leo Barillas. He is an amazing coach himself and has been in/around CrossFit since its humble beginnings. Through his rigorous internship and guidance as a new coach I am able to confidently walk out to any floor and know that I am compentent and confident in my coaching style. He taught my a lot and really gave me my foot in the door to keep growing as a coach and athlete.

What are your values as a coach that differentiate you from others?

I would hope that most of our core values as coaches would be the same and match each others. However I think for me the one thing I really value is the ability to be humble and to keep learning. I don't think there will ever be a point in my career where i feel like i would know everything there is to know about being a coach.

Which certification or seminar has had the biggest impact on your coaching skills?

Surprisingly taking the CFKids course was the most enlightening course, I've taken to date. It not just teaches fundamentals of coaching so that children understand. It's great course to remember that CrossFit is for longevity, mastering moving well and having fun to make it beneficial to our everyday life. Which is something that honestly most adults tend to forget. Everything i learned in that course, not only did i implement it to the CFKids program but to this day I use the methodology for my adult classes.

What Specialty Programs can you create for your new facility?

I am very comfortable setting up new programs and managing them. I launched our CFKids Program at NSX. More recently, I have been given the opportunity to facilitate my own gymnastics seminar.
With my Social Media Management background I am also able to help contribute, manage and grow gym's online presence.

Are you a military veteran?

No, but I am engaged to an Air Force Veteran
